Back to School

This week we are back to school after a week plus a day off.  This past year I’ve tried, and found, a schedule that seems to work well for our family.  The general rule of thumb has been 3 weeks on and 1 week off, year round.  It leaves us flexible for ski trips to Vermont, a week at Disney, visits from grandparents, etc.  And we’ve been flexible enough not to stick to it hard and fast.  We took off 3 weeks in Jan/Feb around our trip to Vermont.  We did 4 weeks of school in a row through June.  One of the reasons I LOVE homeschooling is the flexibility.  We CAN do school all summer and take off 3 weeks in September if we feel like it!

For the most part the 3 week/1 week rotation works great.  By the end of three weeks we’re all ready for a break, and by the end of 1 week the kids are arguing more often and definitely ready for some more structured activity.  (I could have used another week off this time – 1 to be lazy 🙂  and 1 to work on school plans….)

There was a point in the spring when I wasn’t sure if we were going to get to the end of our books.  You know, how summer’s getting closer and you start to see how much longer you have to go….  It wasn’t looking good, but I kept forgetting we had the three months of summer too.  Now we are actually winding down and finishing things up, and it looks like by the end of August we’ll be finished with the current year’s curriculum and ready to “officially” begin then next year in September.
